Stem cells - a new way to treat blindness, scientists say

British experts from the University Southamton found an innovative way to restore vision for older patients with age-related macular degeneration. The disease makes itself known every fifth person over the age of 75 years and leads to complete blindness.

Scientists in the examination of patients found on the anterior surface of the eye stem cells, which can easily turn into sensitive photoreceptors. If the cells to transform and transplanted into the eye, it is possible to restore vision. Macular degeneration is associated with loss of photoreceptors.

Cells available and easy transformation. In the future, scientists believe, they will become the basis for the methodology for restoration of vision in the elderly.
