Every third person on earth is the carrier of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Be wary of these figures is not necessary, because the disease develops only in a small percentage of carriers. Experts from the University of Cape town has created a test by which it is possible to calculate the probability of active disease. This tells the newspaper The Times of India.
Research took the scientists 10 years. First, they collected blood samples of infected and healthy individuals (the total amount more than six thousand specimens). Then the obtained data were subjected to analysis. It was found that the risk of tuberculosis is associated with the activity of certain genes.
In a separate group of scientists brought 16 genes that have a particular impact on the appearance of the disease. The increase of their activity can predict the development of tuberculosis disease for 1.5 years before first positive tests.
