Drug resistance of the tumor is one of the main problems faced by doctors in the fight against cancer. Scientists from the Institute of biomedical research in Barcelona tried to understand how tumor cells survive under conditions of chemotherapy.
Some types of tumors, such as colon cancer or stomach have built-in suppression of protein YBX1. This compound activates numerous genes responsible for cancer processes in the cell. The result of the tumor tissue acquire resistance to chemotherapy.
At the moment scientists are developing special ways of dealing with these types of tumors. New targeted drugs show good results for the application and help in cases when standard chemotherapy has a relatively low efficiency.
