Scientist Timothy Cover from Vanderbilt University in the study found that excessive amounts of salt along with causing stomach ulcers Helicobacter Pylori infection, can lead to the development of cancer, according to Medical Xpress.
The study was conducted in the Mongolian gerbils, which scientists specially infected with Helicobacter Pylori. Rodents were divided into two groups, one of which ate normal food for them, and another group received food with high salt content. Staff then conducted an analysis of the gastric tissues of rodents. The results showed that those rodents who ate salty food, 58 percent were more frequent with cancer than those who ate normal food.
Scientists also found that for the development of gastric cancer requires bacterial oncoprotein called CagA. It produces Helicobacter Pylori. Cancer did not develop in those individuals who received large quantities of salt, but at the same time have been infected with a strain of mentioned bacteria mutated. Earlier studies have established that Helicobacter Pylori began to develop CagA in an environment with high salt content. The results of the mentioned studies have prompted Dr. Cover with colleagues to continue research in this area.
It should be noted that in the past no one had explored the interconnectedness between Helicobacter Pylori infection and increased salt content. According to the authors, in some countries, where there is a high incidence of gastric cancer, the reported prevalence of CagA, as well as the active use of a diet containing large amounts of salt.

However, the experts found a high level of inflammation of the gastric mucosa in experimental rodents, and, in their view, the obtained results are relevant for many types of cancer. It should be noted that almost half of the world's population is infected with Helicobacter Pylori, of which 90 per cent of cases the infection is asymptomatic.
