Among the hundreds of genes responsible for the onset of depression or persistent low mood, scientists have identified one gene, determining the presence of this psychological disorder. This writes The Sydney Morning Herald.
Gene SERT is responsible for the delivery of serotonin in certain areas of the brain. Itself serotonin is necessary for the person to regulate mood. There are three variants of the SERT gene, the combination of two short versions of the gene the researchers found that significantly increases the risk of severe depression.
Definitely, not only genes affect the onset of depression and other mental illnesses. The important role played by environment, upbringing of a person, relationship with friends and family, a sense of inner peace.
