Scientists have developed a contact lens with integrated medicine

Glaucoma is a disease in which the optic nerve is damaged. As a result, the vision is deteriorating. The most common cause of glaucoma is increased pressure within the eye, leading to damage of the nervous tissue. The untreated, glaucoma can cause blindness, says Medical News Today.

Traditional therapy of glaucoma includes eye drops to lower intraocular pressure. However, this treatment has its disadvantages: some scientists have noted an increased dry eyes, headaches, sensitivity to light after backfilling. Some patients may not comply with the treatment regimen. In addition, only 5% of the drug reaches its goal.

As a result, scientists have proposed the use of nanotechnology in the coupe with standard lenses. The drug is combined with nanodiamonds and introduced to the surface of contact lenses. Upon contact with tear fluid lens throws dose of the drug.

Thus, the patient receives continuous microscopic dose of timolol. Overall, the new lenses are no different from ordinary to wear them comfortably.
