Scientists: depression affects the entire body

Researchers from the University of Granada has examined depression as a systemic disease, affecting all organs and systems. To reach this conclusion, scientists conducted a global analysis of 29 studies involving nearly 4 thousand people.

In trying to understand what is happening in the body during depression, the researchers found that this mental disorder significantly increases the likelihood of developing cancer and cardiovascular diseases. For depression in the tissues increases the concentration of hazardous compounds, especially malondialdehyde. Protective substances (antioxidants, zinc, superoxiddismutase), on the contrary, they reduce their activity. The data, experts say, will help in the creation of new methods of treatment and prevention of depression.
