New gel against bacteria consists of 90% water

Bacteria that are resistant properties - new headache of modern medicine. IBM and the Institute of bioengineering and nanotechnology have created a tool that destroys pathogens, writes Remedium. This tool is a synthetic antibacterial gel, which in its composition more than 90 percent consists of water.

The gel can penetrate the dead cells of microbial communities and destroy bacteria. It is formed after being heated to human body temperature. This is the first of its kind non-toxic, biocompatible and biodegradable drug against microbes. It can be used in medical institutions, dealing in medical equipment, such as probes, tubes, catheters. The gel can be used at home. They can be subjected to the processing of dental implants, injectables, as well as to use in the production of antibacterial creams for the skin.

It is based macromolecule polymer with a positive charge. Adding water and heating to body temperature polymers produce a gel. The secret of this phenomenon is simple: the new polymers are attached to each other like the teeth of the zippers on clothing. It turns aqueous solution in the gel.

The gel has many properties of polymers, soluble in water, while not being easily soluble and showing excellent activity against bacteria. Getting on the infected area or in the wound, the positive charge of the gel attracts membrane of microorganisms, which have a negative charge. Bacteria are destroyed due to the destruction of the membrane, and this fact does not develop resistance.
