Mental illness and creativity are linked at the genetic level

Many artists, poets and musicians have a mental disorder. Among creative people, the percentage of such deviations is much higher averages. Experts from king's College London and the company deCODE genetics are confident that this relationship is traced in a deep, genetic level.

Researchers analyzed data from about 86 thousand inhabitants of Iceland. Of them were selected actors, musicians, writers and artists, says Psych Central. The assumption of a genetic link has been confirmed in conducting ad hoc analysis.

It turned out genetic risk for manic-depressive psychosis and schizophrenia among creative people was significantly higher than that of ordinary people. Scientists emphasize the presence of genetic factors of creative personality and their relationship with creativity.
