Meditation helps older people to cope with insomnia

Almost half of people aged over 55 years has sleep problems. Most associate it with depression, fatigue, constant change of mood and health. Only the study involved 49 older people from California, writes Psych Central. It was found that meditation helps to cope with insomnia and improve overall quality of life.

Scientists from the University of southern California divided the volunteers into two groups. 25 people worked on the standard program "sleep hygiene", 24 people were engaged in meditation. Using the Pittsburgh sleep quality index was noted in the meditator group index decreased from 10.2 to 7.4 points, and in the control group from 10.2 to 9.1.

Apart from improving the quality of sleep researchers noted a decrease in the level of anxiety, fatigue, symptoms of depression. The practice of meditation and the training program for the sleep hygiene lonely acted on these indicators. Scientists are advised to take the results of research on the weapons and put them into practice in the treatment of sleep disorders in the elderly.
