Medicines against heartburn damage the kidneys

Trying to cure heartburn and gastritis, you can earn a kidney disease, experts say. Proton pump inhibitors, e.g. omeprazole, may damage kidney tissue. This can lead to chronic renal failure, writes The Times of India.

Researchers analyzed the health of more than 24 thousand patients who develop chronic kidney disease. 25% of the total number of people surveyed took proton pump inhibitors. The analysis of the collected data suggests that this group of drugs increases the risk of kidney disease by 10%, the risk of premature death increases by 76%.

According to another study (Johns Hopkins University), the risk of kidney disease in people taking proton pump inhibitors, is increased by 20-50%. Note that other groups of drugs for the treatment of gastritis, ulcers and heartburn, such effect is not provided.
