Harmful products should be taxed, say experts

Health systems and taxation should be linked, according to scientists from the Universities of Auckland, Otago and Oxford. Xinhua reports: additional taxes on harmful products can prevent a number of deaths and reduce the incidence of diabetes mellitus and other diseases.

Tax cuts for vegetables and fruits allowed to avoid 560 deaths per year. An additional 20 percent tax on fatty foods prevented 1,500 deaths. The high price of junk food and low on useful puts the buyer is faced with a choice: to pay for the pleasure and to bring his death or take advantage of affordable and healthy food.

Additional taxes, scientists say, need to tax foods high in salt content. Special attention deserves the food products produced with the emission of the greenhouse gases. This will avoid almost 4,000 deaths.
