A team of scientists from Israel claims that they have made a breakthrough in science that will lead to salvation suffering from diabetes people.
Type 1 diabetes is associated with a malfunction of the immune system of the patient, which does harm to the pancreas. The body does not produce insulin to keep blood sugar levels, and without regular injections of the patient may lapse into a coma and die.
A new method of treatment under the code name DiaPep277 will block the process, which causes the immune system to attack the pancreas in people with type 1 diabetes. The drug will reach the market within three years.
Scientists hope that the new development will help to stop the progression of the disease, as it will be able to stop the destruction of important insulin cells in the pancreas. The drug will allow the patient again to produce its own insulin to maintain the necessary level of sugar.
Additionally, this will reduce the side effects from synthetic insulin, which gives some complications of diabetes such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, until it is time to transplant.
At the moment the tests are performed in 140 medical centers around the world - in the UK, Europe, North America, South Africa and Israel.
The use of a new drug for a couple of years will allow the pancreas to cure sufficiently to start again to produce the required amount of insulin, and then the patient will be able to completely abandon insulin injections.
